Obsessed Blogger--Can I put that on a resume?

I read a lot of blogs. At this moment, I follow 105--the number goes up and down (mostly up) depending on links I come across, blogs not being updated for months at a time, or me losing patience with people who blur the line between satire and snark once too often. I'm not that sensitive, but I have my limits. Others don't and that's cool. One person's snark is another person's pearls of wisdom.

Thankfully, not all 105 of the blogs on my list post everyday. When I read a blog, most of the time I leave a comment. Maybe it's because I have my own blog or maybe it's because I have a hyper sense of politeness. Whatever. It's just my way of saying, "Hey, I stopped by today." It matters to me to let that blogger know. Could be overkill on my part but that's me. When someone leaves a comment on my blog, I try to acknowledge it. That's not always possible, especially if they have no email address in their  profile. In those cases I'll comment on their comment on my own blog. I suppose you could call it BOCD--blogging obsessive compulsive disorder. Goes well with my CRS.

But it's not as crazy and time-consuming as it sounds. I get nice comments but nothing like The Yarn Harlot or Dooce. I doubt they even read all their comments--they can number in the thousands. Who has THAT kind of time? In that case, I hardly ever bother to leave a comment--I figure it just gets lost in the crowd, but I'm happy they get that much traffic. There are big-time bloggers and designers, however, who always acknowledge a comment on their blog and I've tried to model my on-line behavior after them. Knitspot comes to mind. She almost always emails a few words back. I know she has to be crazy-busy, and I'm always surprised and pleased to see her name in my inbox.

I suppose I'd have more time to knit if I didn't have these crazy compulsions, but once in a while I get an email from somebody telling me how much my comment meant to them, and I know it's all worth it. I'm not curing any diseases or altering the time-space continuum but I'm making the effort to connect with people and that feels good.

I also like to give shout-outs to people who have great stuff out there. Turtlepurl makes these awesome magnetic chart place markers that make my knitting go so much faster. I love them! She also has some really gorgeous yarns. Check her out.

I'm at the gusset of the laurel socks. Hopefully I'll be turning the heel today then I'll post some more photos. Happy almost weekend everybody!

  1. I'm the same way. I try to leave a comment when I read a blog since it's kind of like me waving hello. And, as of recently, I've been trying to respond to peoples' comments that have email attachments. I know it makes me feel like a valued blog reader so I try to value my blog readers!

  2. and once I left a comment with the Yarn Harlot and her need to cast on some lace and she visited my blog and commented! I felt like I had 15 minutes of fame but didn't want to be all "hey look at me" about it so I never told anybody- except for you- well- I told husband but he was unimpressed.

  3. sophanne--if The Harlot is reading all the comments she gets on her blog, then she's even more amazing than I thought. I'm pretty sure the woman never sleeps. I bow to her skills!

  4. I have sure enjoyed your commenting on my blog. It's led to a great blogquaintance and some fun blogversations. I guess I didn't make those words up, but I like them! :) I never commented much before I started writing on my blog regularly, and then I realized how nice it is to know that people are reading. I read and read and enjoy and often never commented. Thanks for the link to turtlepurl and knitspot. I checked both out. Looking forward to seeing photos of your socks!

  5. I think you're fabulous -- for doing such a fine blog yourself and for being such a wonderful reader. One of my friends asked if I was getting tired of her commenting on my blog if all she said was "this is great" each time. Heck no, right? Every comment is appreciated. Great to know someone else is reading it, let alone "getting" it. Keep up the great work, JelliDonut!

  6. I always try to comment because you have such great spirit and you make me laugh. Like yourself, I truly value a little sentence or two on my blog. It makes me happy. We do this because we are here to CONNECT! Knit on!

  7. Forget the Yarn Harlot, how about The Pioneer Woman site? YIKES. I remember when I first started reading that site a couple years ago it would be just a couple hundred comments and now it's thousandssssssssssssssssss. I can't imagine even trying to read that many, which makes me wonder why so many people leave them. lol If you're pretty sure they're not going to be read, why bother, IMHO. I like the back-and-forth conversations with people too. :)

  10. Hi,

It's nice reading your comment philosophy, and I always appreciate when you leave comments on my blog.

I started out trying to always respond to blog comments, but I kinda fizzled on that in my knitting blog on blogger. I feel like my responses to comments aren't seen, because blogger doesn't inform commenters of replies. On Livejournal, every reply notifies the commenter, which is a structure I like. Sometimes I'm not sure how best to reply to comments on blogger so I just don't.

Knit on, blog on, comment on!

A few people seem to be having problems leaving comments. I have no clue why--Blogger doesn't make it easy to figure these things out. If you are having issues, you can always email me. Thanks for commenting, or trying to...
