Why is Cupid naked, and would he like free yarn?

I am a hopeless non-romantic and probably the least sentimental person I know. Maybe it comes from being fairly low maintenance--I don't mind eating alone in a restaurant and I think it's rather silly to celebrate things like the anniversary of the day DH and I met or the first time DD went to a sleep-over. Not to imply that if YOU do these things you've been dipped in honey and rolled in sugar and make my teeth hurt, but that's just me.

I don't get all bent out of shape about getting a table at the perfect restaurant on Valentines Day, mostly because DH is usually working on that day and if we do go out to dinner, it's usually later in the evening. Are we going out tonight? Who knows. Will I get flowers and candy? Who knows. Do I care? Not really. I just want the damn cat to stop barfing today. Told you I'm low maintenance.

But I did promise a giveaway today, and it's mostly in celebration of my blog being a year old. Just leave a comment about how you feel about Valentines Day. Love it? Hate it? Didn't even realize today is Valentines Day? Whatever. Just leave it HERE in the next 24 hours (noon, MST). I'll let the random number generator pick a number and I'll post the winner tomorrow, on my way to Madrona. Here's what the lucky winner will receive:

It's a skein of lightweight Socks that Rock, in the colorway Garden Daze. It's killing me to part with this but if you knit something gorgeous with it and send me a photo I'll feel better.

I have also succumbed to that crazy thing that happens to people when they're about to leave for Rhinebeck or Stitches East/West, or any other fiber festival/workshop. I'm knitting a sweater that I hope to wear at Madrona. Seriously. Because I don't have enough to do right now, what with packing, deciding WHAT to pack, making sure the stuff I have to do for DH and DD before I leave gets done (think FAFSA and other alcohol-required chores). I am hopeless, but at least I'm wearing clothes.

  1. Hi, Susan, I found your blog through CrazyAuntPurl. How do I feel about Valentine's Day? I think it's a made-up holiday to generate income for the greeting card, floral and candy companies. I couldn't care less about February 14th, and neither could my DH; we say, "I love you," to each other every day.
Love the yarn p0rn pix! Pick me, pick me! : )

  2. Nancy G--yarn p0rn pix. Hehe! I'd bribe the random number generator just for you but I have to save my last remaining pre-college $$$ for the Madrona yarn market. I'll cross my fingers for you anyway. Thanks for dropping by!

  3. How I feel about Valentine's Day is that it's overrated. My hopelessly romantic side battles with my ever practical no nonsense side. Which one wins depends on the year. This year I had planned a lovely dinner at home, attempting to combine the 2 sides into 1. This is not happening because yesterday I sprained my ankle and so instead I am sitting at home knitting. Fair tradeoff really, I need to get some more stash busting completed, you know, to make room for that lovely yarn..

  4. I agree with you about Valentine's Day. I used to be a freak about it in HS and College, but now it's just another day. I usually write the DH a love note and that's it.

  5. I'm not a kissy-kissy gushy-goo snuggle-softie or anything, but I think it's nice and very important to take one day out of the year and say "I love you so much that I'm going to spend an outrageous amount on a special meal, maybe some flowers and a card, a little present... some yarn perhaps?"

I choose to say it on my birthday. To me.

    I told you I'm not a softie.

  6. The FAFSA gives me fits too.

I'm pretty low-maintenance, too, and I'm pretty low-key about this lovey-dovey holiday. However, this year I've been far more aware of the approach of Valentine's Day than I usually am, because both of the teenage creatures that inhabit our dwelling have current sweethearts and both have had sweetheart-related activities to attend or prepare.

My own sweetheart and I don't really exchange gifts. We agreed 20 years ago to skip the required gift-giving and to instead share a meal out. But I did accidentally drop a heavy hint that some dark chocolate with raspberries might be a welcomed offering. It was rather manipulative of me, but I know he's got a secret source of the stuff and I want it, dammit.

  7. I'm also low-maintenance! We may have a (free) sitter tonight but, still no hopes of having romantic plans. :)

  8. Love it? no--hate it?? No--I do love heart shaped motifs--and valentines day is filled them--I love red--but not so much pink.

A lot of valentines day is commercial--about buying chocolate and presents--and i don't like that much.. but its also a celebration of love--and who couldn't like that (even if you aren't in love with any one at the moment?

  9. I think I could give you a run for your money on being the least non-romantic person out there. Enjoy Madrona (jealous x 1,000,000) and hope you get the sweater done.

  10. I think VD is a great opportunity to tell our loved ones that we love them ;-) I am happy that I got a lovely card from each of my boys and a big box of Smarties (the English ones--they are SO much better!) and a chocolate rose from my DH. At this point in my life, VD is more about family (and family love) than romance!
Awesome yarn, awesome giveaway! Have fun at Madrona and I hope the sweater is ready in time.

  11. I like Valentine's Day just fine. My husband and I don't get really crazy about it since pretty much every year since we started dating one of us either had to work or go to school on that evening. This year, I'm just making dinner at home (although that's typical for a Monday) and making a red velvet cake. We're staying in and renting a movie. To me, that is just as nice.

  12. I love Valentine's Day! (probably because it's so close to my birthday) I usually get or make a heart shaped cake. As part of my birthday/valentine present I have had the Barbershop quartet sing to me. I get flowers. Love, love, love, chocolate. Love is the greatest!! (yes, I get emotional. yes, I cry over silly sentimental commercials) Am I high maintenance? I didn't think so. Maybe I am?!

  14. I like Valentine's day but I could certainly do without it. It's a cute little holiday that really doesn't mean much. It's just another day that lots of money will be spent so people can talk about what their honey did for them and where went... Oh by the way, did you see the beautiful roses my honey bought me for V-day ? I posted the photo on my blog.

  15. I am not big on Valentine's Day either, but I've begun to enjoy it lots more again with Davey. He keeps telling me, "Happy Valentine's Day Mommy". That I love.

    That yarn. Wow.

    What sweater are you knitting.

Emailing you after dinner. Excited! :)

  16. Don't hate it, but don't celebrate it either. I hate waiting and I hate crowds --- so eating at a restaurant is out. I can't have chocolate or wine.

Flowers are nice, but really --- I grow orchids. Buying flowers seems kind of silly.

But a big hug and kiss --- THAT I will celebrate on Valentine's Day (and any other day for that matter).

  19. What time is it there? Have I missed the deadline??? I think I have - but I'll leave a comment anyway to say I am totally one of those sappy sacks that you hate. Last night, hubby cooked me the dinner of my choosing (filet mignon, roasted yukon golds, and spinach w/ artichoke hearts), I made dessert (individual chocolate soufflés ) and we killed off a bottle of prosecco. :)

  20. I'd settle for just being in the same room as my DH on Valentine's Day. He is ALWAYS away working the Miami Boat Show, so I don't think we've ever spent a VD together in more than 20 years. The cards have petered out over the years too, but I get a 'love you' text........just like most other days!

  22. Blast, I get behind a couple of days in the blog reading and you give away Socks that Rock yarn! Oh well.

Valentine's Day was low maintenance here. My hubby asked the day before, "What do you want for Valentine's Day?" and I said, "No worries, you bought me a jumbo flyer for the spinning wheel. Isn't it pretty?" And he said, "Wow, I'm getting better and better at this." (Get 'em young, train 'em right, that's my motto.)
